Director, Research Operations
Job Summary:
Directs research administration for a large department and is directly responsible for grant operations, financial planning, and Pre-and Post-Award management activities. Provides professional expertise in the complex areas of sponsored research contracts and agreements, subcontracts, clinical trial agreements, and material transfer agreements.
Job Duties:
- Works with the institutional Office of Sponsored Programs to prepare and transfer, pre-award, post-award and grant renewal applications.
- Primary contact for institutional offices including, Accounting, Sponsored Programs, Office of Clinical Research, the Department of Laboratory Animal Research, Research Imaging Institute, and the Institutional Review Board.
- Assists faculty with finding funding opportunities and counsels on the unique requirements of each call for proposals.
- Assists faculty with preparation and submission of study proposals, grants, and associated documents to funding organizations supporting animal and human research.
- Prepares, negotiates, and manages research budgets and contracts including invoicing for services provided and ensures payments are submitted to vendors and patients in a timely fashion.
- Manages subcontracts and consultancies with other national/international academic institutions; liaises as appropriate with Industry and Foundation granting agencies who have awarded grants to the Institute.
- Monitors resource allocations and ensures that funds are used in accordance with external sponsors’ policies.
- Resolves deficits and/or inappropriate expenses.
- Assists with the preparation and submission of progress reports for funding agencies.
- Designs workflows and monitors protocol adherence for ongoing research projects.
- Ensure compliance with all internal and external regulatory requirements including NIH reporting requirements, IRB proposals, annual renewals, and protocol amendments.
- Serves as liaison and/or participates in regulatory audits, inspections, site visits, and/or internal reviews.
- Develops and recommends corrective action to address deficiencies identified.
- Assists with developing annual budget projections for individual investigators and the institute as a whole.
- Oversees semi-annual reporting processes.
- Orients faculty to institutional research policies and procedures.
- Management duties include interviewing, selecting and training employees; setting and adjusting pay rates and hours of work; planning and directing work; appraising productivity and efficiency, handling complaints/grievances and disciplining when necessary.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Education:
Bachelor's degree is required; Master's degree is preferred.
Experience:
Nine(9) years experience in research or related administration is required, or seven (7) years experience with a Master's degree is preferred.
