Job Summary:
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the UT Health Specialty Hospital is the senior physician leader of the Hospital and a member of the Hospital’s executive team reporting directly to the Hospital CEO. As the senior physician leader, the CMO will serve as a physician champion for initiatives related to all patient outcomes (quality, safety, efficiency and patient experience), interdisciplinary and comprehensive care delivery, provider engagement and satisfaction, professional liability, utilization review and risk management. The CMO is responsible for integrating and coordinating the Hospital clinical practice across all clinical service lines to develop and deploy methods of process improvement designed to improve clinical quality, enhance patient experience, and reduce healthcare costs. In this role they will work closely with and provide guidance to the Hospital clinical department chairs who are responsible for the service lines. The CMO is responsible for planning, organizing, monitoring, and evaluating the professional activities of the medical staff members of the Specialty Hospital, particularly with regard to the quality of care and service and the appropriate utilization of medical services. As the physician leader, the CMO will provide consistent leadership and maintain excellent interpersonal relations with all medical and dental staff members as well as all other staff. The CMO will work closely with the Hospital’s Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) to establish a dyad leadership model for each Hospital clinical service. Together they will develop appropriate standards, policies, and procedures that will always ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation requirements and promote efficiency and quality of each unit. The CMO will also provide supervision of the medical directors of the Hospital to ensure consistency and communication in their efforts at enhancing the function of their respective Hospital services.
Job Responsibilities:
- Plan, execute, and report on the quality and efficiency improvement and patient safety programs for the Hospital, and maintain all regulatory requirements.
- Oversee quality and patient safety strategies, patient experience, infection control, and all performance improvement initiatives. Optimize clinical throughput and the efficiency of all operational processes associated with delivering excellent clinical care.
- Ensure that medical staff activities and operations are carried out in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, laws governing business operations, and the requirements of accreditation agencies.
- Maintain strong physician relations and provide support services to physicians. Collaborate with medical staff to develop and implement new clinical systems and programs to enhance existing service lines.
- Foster clinical integration across the continuum of patient care services provided by the Hospital, ambulatory practice and health system.
- Allocate adequate resources and implement an effective and ongoing program to monitor, evaluate, and improve the quality-of-care services delivered to patients. Ensure that services are provided with respect to quality, patient and stakeholder requirements, and efficiency.
- Establish a plan to address resource allocation and operational performance as measured by quality, service, cost, and growth.
- Ensure the highest standards of healthcare delivery and outcomes as well as a constant patient focus.
- Fosters a culture of service by setting example of servant leadership.
- Lead Medical Directors and other physician leaders to ensure consistency of care across the Hospital in advancement of organization’s goals and desired outcomes.
- Partner with other members of Hospital Executive Team to create a culture that promotes patient safety, outstanding outcomes and a collaborative working environment for providers and staff.
- Serve as the “Chief Outcome Officer” championing the pursuit of best-in-class outcomes in patient quality, safety, and experience.
- Develop and oversee the Hospital Quality Assurance and Utilization Management Plans.
- Assist in planning and development of new medical programs and services.
- Primary report to the Hospital CEO and secondary report to the practice plan (UT Health Physicians) CMO, annually evaluated by both leaders.
Education:
- MD, MBBS or DO degree with board certification in a medical or surgical specialty.
- MBA, MHA or MPH preferred but not required if equivalent documented expertise.
Experience:
- At least ten (10) years of clinical practice.
- Eight (8) years of experience in an Academic Medical Center
- Minimum of six (6) years of progressive hospital physician leadership experience.
