The Population Health department provides community-based integrated health care for patients of all ages while focusing on the physical and socio-economic needs of our patients. As a department we are proactive in patient outreach to close gaps between the patient and the care they may need now or in the future, our goal is to tailor the patient care to meet the individuals needs.

The Population Health Business Data Scientist based in San Antonio, TX will be a key team member for strategic growth at UT Health San Antonio. We are seeking a candidate who has a strong background in data analytics, predictive modeling, and forecasting coupled with strategic thinking, so we are not only implementing a model with proven outcomes but improving on the model over time. S/he should be comfortable leveraging data to make informed business decisions while building internal and external relationships. This role requires a drive to lead overall data analytics management of the services offering to create innovative ways to analyze and understand data.

 

Job Summary:

Responsible for evaluation and analysis of population health and value-based care activities for the UT Health San Antonio Center for Population Health and Value Based Care. Working under the direction of the Director of Population Health Analytics, the Business Scientist understands the fundamentals of population health and value-based care and, using tools and concepts such as data visualization, forecasting and predictive modeling, financial modeling, and Population Health modeling, will leverage data to align with and build upon the strategies established by leadership.

 

Job Duties:

  1. Define complex and detailed statistical analyses and modeling of clinical and operational data with outputs that are clear and relevant to stakeholders; such as opportunity analyses, clinical trending, operational KPIs, predictive modeling, program evaluation, customer reporting, product development, and ad-hoc analytics.
  2. Participate in the design and development of statistical analyses and reports that explore and present large amounts of data to discover underlying patterns and trends related to volumes, operational efficiency, cohort analysis, and clinical performance.
  3. Apply research and evaluation standards, descriptive statistics, and data management principles to translate complex data into meaningful content.
  4. Through the use of risk stratification approximate the spend of different patient populations to mitigate unnecessary spend. Develop models and understanding of value-based care and shared savings contracts to provide scenarios to full valuation to maximize potential revenue.
  5. Working with the Clinical Director of Population Health design models of care to focus on specific patient populations to define clinical protocols and care pathways. Analyze patient data to stratify patients by risk profile to ensure each patient receives the right care at the right time. 
  6. Present findings using verbal, written, and graphic communication techniques. Offer recommendations to support organizational performance improvement.
  7. Independently complete analysis, development, and enhancement of analytical and operational BI solutions to fulfill business needs.
  8. Apply understanding of dimensional data modeling techniques, data warehousing, design, and concepts to produce balanced scorecard design, and design of dashboards and KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators).
  9. Stay informed about Business Intelligence industry trends, technologies and best practices that can be applied to achieve organizational objectives.
  10. Analyze large data sets of structured, semi-structured unstructured data to discover data insights and collaborate with business partners to deliver business value to discover trends, patterns, and actionable insights.
  11. Design interactive and/or advanced visualizations (Tableau) that enhance analytics storytelling to support business decisions.
  12. Navigate multiple business lines and draw holistic insights from large data sets.
  13. Interpret and develop complex SQL queries for both ad-hoc and ETL uses.
  14. Provides direction and guidance to less experienced team members.
  15. Performs all other duties as assigned.

 

Education:

Bachelor’s Degree in Business Analytics, Data Science, Health Analytics Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Information Technology or any other scientific, technical, healthcare informatics, or mathematics field. Four (4) years of comparable experience may be substituted for a degree.

Experience:

One (1) to Five (5) years of directly related Epic experience including in-depth knowledge of data analytics, data science, data warehousing, data lakes and marts, and metadata management, and dimensional is preferred. Healthcare background with experience in Population Health and Value-based Care models preferred.

 

Additional Knowledge, License, and Certifications:

Certified in Tableau is preferred. Proficiency with sophisticated analytics tools and programming languages (SAS, R, Python, Java, Spark, Hadoop, Alteryx, SQL); proficiency with data visualization tools (Tableau, QlikView, and others). As specified by the department director, additional certifications for assigned software analytical tools (such as Tableau).  Certification must be maintained per Health-IT standards.

Certified in Epic Cogito Data Warehouse & Caboodle Data Model.  Epic certification must be maintained per Epic Corporation standards within 180 days of hire is required.
