Job Summary:

The Chief Nursing Informatics Officer (CNIO) will lead the University of Texas Health San Antonio (UTHSA) nursing informatics program.  The CNIO will, in collaboration with other leaders, help establish the strategy and implementation of nursing informatics to support the new UT Health San Antonio Multispecialty and Research Hospital (MSRH).  In addition, the CNIO will help lead the expansion and optimization of nursing informatics to improve processes and efficiencies in the rapidly expanding UTHSA ambulatory system and assist with the Epic Refuel.  The CNIO will work collaboratively with the training team to help ensure optimal clinician education in the Epic as well as the associated clinical technologies and devices.  The CNIO will help establish enterprise nursing informatics collaboration between the ambulatory system, inpatient, Nursing School and other schools within UTHSA. 

UTHSA has a robust analytics program supporting clinical, operational, financial, value-based care and research initiatives.  UTHSA leverages the Epic Cogito suite, Epic SliceDicer, Epic cognitive computing in addition to other business intelligence and analytics software. 

The CNIO will report to the CHIVO (Chief Health Information and Value Officer) and work in partnership with the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO), Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) and Assistant Vice President of Clinical Systems.  
 

Job Duties:

  • Serves as the strategic liaison for health IT (Information Technology) efforts representing nursing and patient care team needs.
  • Develops the nursing/clinical informatics strategies related to health IT procurement, implementation, maintenance and optimization.
  • Collaborates with training team to develop robust nursing and ancillary education for Epic and associated technologies and devices.
  • Develops clinical informatics nursing system strategies in collaboration with other senior nursing/clinical, medical informatics and operational leaders.
  • Acts as a change agent in the identification, development, planning, implementation and value measurement of informatics strategies to support quality patient care and professional practice.
  • Designs, develops and implements appropriate service delivery in collaboration with nursing and IT leadership in defining, delivering and improving services for the enterprise and its customers.
  • Works with clinical and IT leaders in evaluating the effectiveness of technologies and workflows that impact clinical users.
  • Collaborates with nurse leaders in planning and implementing program expansion and growth, including new business ventures, construction, and projects.
  • Promotes advancement of clinical and business intelligence systems capable of reporting variables to evaluate patient outcomes and to support research and operational improvement across the continuum of care.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with administrative teams, clinical leaders, information technology, financial services and quality/regulatory/risk management among others in the development of high quality and innovative clinical information systems that assist clinicians in their delivery of care.
  • Provides critical analysis and evaluation of health IT and recommends revision of clinical systems, processes and workflow to ensure achievement of positive patient outcomes.
  • Collaborates in partnership with information technology leadership to leverage predictive analytics tools to identify at-risk patients and populations.
  • Develops and maintains standards of care that utilize informatics to help inform evidence-based practice, quality of care, patient safety and clinician workflows.
  • Develops and provides oversight of policies, procedures and processes for data analysis within the UTHSA nursing community.
  • Provides leadership in disaster planning and recovery strategies for nursing consistent with principles of high reliability.

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required.
  • Master's degree in Informatics, Healthcare or Business Administration or related field is required. 

Experience:

•    Five (5) years of management experience with progressive responsibility and oversight of clinical informatics infrastructure.
•    Registered Nurse license (or eligible for licensure) in Texas.
•    Strong experience in enterprise Epic with certifications preferred.
•    Inpatient and/or ambulatory nursing experience.
•    Knowledge of processes such as software development lifecycle, Agile, such as Lean and Six Sigma, Design Thinking
